MAVIS Mk.II Games Software - Reconstruction ------------------------------------------- 19th March 2026 Overview -------- This repository contains reconstructed software from a microcassette used with the MAVIS Mk.II experimental computer system (circa 1979). MAVIS (Microprocessor Audio-Visual Information System) was a pioneering British assistive technology project linked to the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Loughborough University, developed with support from Ferranti. Precise authorship of the included games remains unclear. The project is a digital archaeology and preservation effort aimed at rescuing historically significant but at-risk artefacts from obsolete media. Provenance ----------- The cassette data was retrieved from original ~1982 era MAVIS mini-cassettes. Initial data recovery was performed by contributors on the Stardot Forums. Accuracy has been improved by additional research around MAVIS headed by Barrie Ellis researching the history of Electronic Assistive Technology in gaming and leisure. Reconstruction Notes -------------------- The original data was recovered from degraded mini-cassette media and required significant interpretation. The included files, emulator, and outputs represent a best-effort reconstruction. Some sections are incomplete or uncertain; behaviours have been inferred where necessary. Results may not precisely match original hardware behaviour and should be treated as approximate historical reconstructions. Purpose ------- This material is shared strictly for non-commercial research, education, and historical preservation of early computing and electronic assistive technology. Copyright and Rights -------------------- Copyright status is uncertain; the material may still be protected under UK law. No claim of ownership is made by the repository maintainers. The content is provided in good faith solely for non-commercial research and educational purposes, consistent with preservation efforts for orphaned or at-risk digital heritage. Every reasonable effort has been made to respect original creators and institutions. Rights Holder Notice -------------------- If you are (or represent) a rights holder and have concerns about this material, please contact: info@oneswitch.org.uk / oneswitch@gmail.com. I will respond promptly and take appropriate action, which may include removal or restriction of access. Acknowledgements ---------------- Thank you to Dominic Plunkett, the contributors on the Stardot Forums, Julia and David Schofield, Nancy Evans, the National Physical Laboratory archive team, and many others who helped make this reconstruction possible.
