Starting in September 1988, came The Whistler talking cassette. It was initially compered by David Calderwood working in customer support for the accessibility company Dolphin Systems.
Across the cassettes, a rich mix of people, accents and blind accessible computer topics can be found. Most starting with a colourful and unique introduction.
Legends in blind accessibility can be found, such as Ray Hazan and many others.
Almost all feature updates of Dolphin assistive technology. Scattered among them are some mentions of blind accessible video games.
Hosting was later taken over by Sue and Pete Mead for over ten years, and finally in 2003 by Simon Wilkes.
This page offers up a small sample of these recordings, documenting the move from BBC Micros to DOS then into Windows use. Also the move from cassettes and diskettes to CD-ROMS onwards. Also the rush of the internet and the World Wide Web.
Huge thanks to Colin Howard for his invaluable help in preserving these cassettes.
